In March of 1984 Champaign Landmark had just three elevators–Urbana, Mechanicsburg and Mingo, totaling 1.4 million bushels of space and 3 million bushels in annual sales.
Today, the Grain Department has grown to 13 branches with 11.7 million bushels of storage (as the year closed in Feburary of 2006). It includes all corn, soybeans and wheat marketed through Champaign Landmark by our customers. The department also includes all grain related service items such as drying and storage. Grain receipts for Fiscal Year 2006 were as follows: Wheat – 1.6 million bushels, Soybeans – 7.0 million bushels, Corn – 17.6 million bushels for a total of 26.2 million bushels. The railroads continue to be a major part of our total grain operations, with the majority of our grain being shipped from our facilities in rail cars.
The main office for the Grain Merchandising Department is located in Mechanicsburg. There, Ed Nienaber advises the managers of our 13 branches of the changes and trends in the markets. He and his merchandising staff, Wes Bahan and Lisa Warne, create marketing programs to benefit Champaign Landmark customers. Ed monitors the daily activities of the U.S. and world markets to develop strategies that will allow Champaign Landmark to find the best prices for our customers’ commodities.
